Two weeks after the Recording Industry Association of America announced it had struck deals with top internet service providers to cut off unrepentant music sharers, not a single major ISP will cop to agreeing to the ambitious scheme, and one top broadband company says it's not on board.
The RIAA's announcement came as it revealed it was closing down its massive litigation campaign, which has targeted more than
for allegedly sharing copyrighted Read the rest of this entry »

.
Sure, it may sound like a great idea. After all, we do it for movies, TV, and video games. Everybody can make snap decisions about what they will and won't watch based on these handy albeit often wildly inconsistent guides. Of course, to buy into this, you need to put aside the fact that these ratings are often misleading: One man's NC-17 or Mature rating is another's R or Teen. Look at the latest Facebook imbroglio. Now, meetings are likely to include streaming video and online interaction. And back in their rooms, travelers are downloading movies and logging onto peer-to-peer networks.
Event organizers and hotels and conference centers are struggling to keep Read the rest of this entry »

That creates what seems to be a conflict of interest for the governor of the state since his in-state horse tracks allow gambling online.
Florida horsemen have negotiated a deal with two racetracks in Miami, Gulfstream Park Racing and Casino, and Churchill Downs Inc. Read the rest of this entry »

You miss the point - delivering the Internet to conumers is only profitable for a company if they are a near-monopoly. Having a couple of customers here, a couple there doesn't work - there are labor-intensive resources that are tied to geography. Like fixing wires when they break.
So what we have been seeing for the last 10 years or so is just a pure market penetration play. If AT&T gets to take people away from Comcast they "win" and Comcast Read the rest of this entry »

Rest in peace?
As the Internet entered America's households, some had predicted that would be the future of public libraries.
"There was a lot of fear about it," said Dawn McCleery, head reference librarian at the Marion Public Library. "The fear was it would replace us."
So far that hasn't happened. Marion and other public library systems have transformed themselves, becoming community centers that offer computer classes, programs for children Read the rest of this entry »
